What are the Benefits and Challenges of OTT Advertising?

Posted on February 3, 2020February 3, 2020 by susannlisena

Before you begin looking at new advertising options for your company, it’s a good idea to find out more about what CTV and OTT advertising is. OTT ads are simply content provided to viewers on their TV sets while they watch their favorites shows. But the ads are targeted directly to the viewers based on several factors. This can include the age demographics, their location, and even what they search for online. The ads are delivered on TVs that are connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi or a wired connected. And they are enabled by what is known as programmatic technology.

What is Programmatic Technology?

Programmatic technology is data-driven targeting that uses information from your online searches and activity on the internet to find out what your interests are. Marketing teams take this information to create ads and show them while you are watching relatable content. This helps the consumer see more ads about the products or services they are interested in. And at the same time, it helps companies and their advertising teams find out more about their target audience.

Connected TV vs OTT – What is the Difference?

Many people believe that connected TV and OTT are the same thing. The CTV meaning refers to a device that someone uses to watch a video, or an ad. OTT however refers to how that video or ad was delivered to the viewer’s screen. You can enjoy a high def TV commercial on your 4K Smart TV, which is a CTV device. But the process of how that ad ended up on your TV is the definition of OTT.

For example, if someone is streaming Netflix by using an app on their smartphone device, they are able to access this content over the top or OTT and watch it on their phone. If someone is streaming Netflix using an app installed on their Smart TV at home, they are access that content over the top or by OTT, by using their connected TV, or CTV. Therefore, CTV refers to the device such as your smart TV, Apple TV, Fire Stick, or Roku Box. OTT refers to how you are able to stream the content, such as through your internet service provider.
